Points Commander

Built from scratch because nothing else did exactly what I needed.

How this started

It started with the news feed problem. Points and miles information is scattered everywhere β€” subreddits, deal blogs, newsletters, Twitter threads β€” and most of it is buried under affiliate links and recycled content. I wanted one clean place to see what was actually worth paying attention to, filtered down to the programs and cards I actually use.

Then came the perks problem. Credit card benefits have turned into monthly coupon books. The Amex Platinum has something like fifteen separate credits across eight different vendors. The Citi Strata has a hotel credit that resets annually and is trivially easy to forget. The Chase Sapphire has rotating categories that sound great until you realize you never activated them. Forgetting a $25 dining credit is real money β€” and across a wallet full of premium cards, the math adds up fast. I needed a place to see every credit, every reset cycle, and mark things used so I didn't leave value on the table.

The points vault came last, but it might be the most useful part. I had balances spread across six or seven programs with no clear picture of what I actually had β€” or what it was worth. Points aren't worth a fixed amount; they're worth what you redeem them for. I wanted to attach a real, editable cents-per-point value to each balance and see a total portfolio number that meant something.

Coupled with all of that was the fact that I wanted to go deeper on Python and Django, get serious about web design, and figure out what the new generation of AI tools could actually do in a real application. Points Commander is the product of all of those things at once β€” a working tool I use every day, built to teach myself how to build it.

What it does

πŸ’΅

Points Vault

All your loyalty balances in one place with editable cents-per-point values. See your total portfolio value, track stale balances before they expire, and understand what you actually have β€” not just how many points.

Trip Reports

Real trips, real numbers β€” how the points and strategy actually played out. Every booking, every program, and what each was worth. The blended CPP figures are calculated from actual cash prices and actual fees, not headline numbers.

πŸ“–

The Playbook

A reference guide to the concepts that matter β€” how transfer partners work, what CPP actually means, which airline alliances open which doors, and how to think about the points game without getting lost in the noise.

The philosophy

β†’

Real numbers only.

The CPP calculations in the trip reports subtract actual fees from actual cash prices before dividing by actual points redeemed. The 2.18Β’ blended CPP on the Paris trip and the 5.98Β’ on the Alaska Miles return flight are honest math, not marketing copy.

β†’

No affiliate motivation.

Built for personal use, optimized for honesty. The card list includes what's actually useful β€” including no-fee cards and the ones that didn't work out β€” not what pays a referral commission.

β†’

Track what you actually have, plan around what you can actually do.

The AI Advisor doesn't give you generic "best credit cards for travel" advice. It reads your actual Vault balances and transfer partner access and tells you what you can book right now β€” and what you'd need to get there if you can't.

News feed

Points Commander is an ongoing personal project β€” part tool, part learning exercise. It's grown from a simple news aggregator into something I reach for every time I'm planning a trip or evaluating whether a card credit actually got used. The codebase keeps growing because the problem space keeps growing.
